Kampi Latifa

Kampi Latifah is 16 years old and has just completed her O Level exams from Kololo Secondary School. She loves biology and chemistry and wants to become a doctor so that she can treat her mother who suffers from asthma. She lives in Naguru Godown with her mother and sister in a two-roomed house that has no running water. Her mother struggles, single-handedly, to run their home after her father abandoned them when she was 8 years old, following a fight he had with her mother on learning that she had got a job. Currently her mother works as a househelp and also runs a small kiosk selling vegetables. Kampi’s younger sister manages the kiosk most times. Kampi started playing tennis during the COVID lockdown at a nearby field, in Naguru Katale, where a tennis coach was teaching other children. Her interest in tennis grew and she realized she was good at it, so she stuck to playing tennis and now says she admires and wants to play like Serena Williams. Kampi has won some tennis tournaments and even played for the national girls 12 & Under and 14 & Under teams. She embraced the COLTA opportunity and has high hope that it will help her achieve her dream of becoming a doctor and playing in some of the world’s biggest tennis tournaments like Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open. She never lost a match in the recent qualifiers held to select the Girls National team in the 16 & Under category set to represent the country in January 2025 in Nairobi Kenya. Kampi believes this is a result of the training she has been undergoing with COLTA which has greatly improved her game.

Jonah Ssentongo

Jonah Ssentongo is a strong-willed boy aged 15 years. He goes to school in Kololo Secondary School and is in S2. He lives with his auntie who took him and his brother in after their mother abandoned them in the house when she became unable to pay the rent. His auntie has 2 children and together they live in a single roomed house. He last saw his father when he was 8 years old and he meets his mother very rarely, usually only on occasions when there is need for her to sign documents related to his school or travel for tournaments. His auntie pays for his school fees with occasional help from his mother and friends. He loves school and desires to study as far as he can, as long as there is school fees.

He started playing tennis during the COVID Lockdown at Naguru Katale in Kampala. He loves tennis very much and is a fierce competitor on court. Sadly, he is often quite stressed because his auntie doesn’t really see any value in him playing tennis so she is always moody and quarrelsome towards him when he goes for training. He is forced to leave training sessions earlier than the rest in order not to get in trouble with his auntie.

He dreams of living a better life in a comfortable less stressful environment. He wants to work hard so that he can get sponsors who will help him develop his tennis to a very high level so that he can play tournaments like the ATP and the Grand Slams. With the availability of balls, rackets, strings, a court and a coach provided by COLTA, Jonah feels very motivated to pursue his dreams and believes this is a chance for him to make something out of his life.

Tony Blair Oweknimungu

Tony Blair Oweknimungu is a brilliant 15 year old boy. He is neat and organized always making sure his clothes are clean. He has three siblings and they live with their father and mother in Naguru Godown, in Kampala, a dwelling place for very low income earners. They live in a single roomed house where they all have to cram when it’s bed time. He goes to Kololo Secondary School and is now in S.2. He loves school and wants to become a doctor. His parents are very low income earners who struggle to maintain the family. His father is a carpenter who works as a casual labourer at construction sites while his mother sells “anyoya”, a local snack made from beans and maize, popular with low income earners from northern and eastern Uganda. Combined, they both barely make $3 a day. Life is tough for them and keeping Tony and his siblings in school is difficult because his parents struggle with their school tuition fees. His sister has had to drop out of school because his parents cannot afford it. Many times Tony goes hungry in school because food is given to only those who have paid their school fees on time. Even when they have paid, getting food in his school is a struggle because the food is not enough so the children literally fight for it and many like Tony often miss out. At home, Tony is troubled by fights between his parents who are always quarrelling. The burden of maintaining the family is mostly met by his mother because his father gets hired occasionally and also struggles with alcoholism which fuels their fights. Tony often wishes he would be somewhere else and not have to witness the troubles at home. Tennis gives him the chance, even if temporarily, to get out of that environment for some time.

Tony loves to play tennis and he is clearly good at it. He learnt how to play tennis during the COVID lockdowns which rendered many people quite idle. He is a good kid, but the stress-filled COVID environment at home almost turned him into a troublesome child. He began to cause trouble in the neighborhood, fighting kids to grab whatever they had, especially food. During that time, he was introduced to tennis by Coach Edward, who knew the family well. He saw teaching Tony tennis as a way keeping him busy and out of trouble. Tony fell in love with tennis and his progress was so impressive that soon he started to compete in tournaments, some of which he won. He made the country’s boys 12 & Under and 14 & Under teams, playing with great success and getting many trophies. He loves tennis and believes it will transform his life by helping him through his education. He feels like the COLTA program has helped him gain a clear focus on what he wants for his life, it has showed him that there are opportunities out there that can make him live a better life.

Seebi Muzamil

Sebbi Muzamil is a very disciplined 14 year old boy. He goes to Kololo Secondary School and is in S2. His father travelled abroad to the Middle East where he works menial jobs to be able to support his family. His mother makes and sells crafts by recycling used car tyres and other materials to raise some money to support the family. They live in a house hold of 10 people in a two roomed house of approximately 280 square feet. There are many petty thieves in the area where he stays who steal their shoes which they leave outside the house during the day due to space constraints. It makes him feel like moving to a better place with better security. He loves school though he doesn’t like that some students are bullies who often grab their stuff. Getting food in school at lunch time is a struggle as the bigger and stronger boys push him and other smaller boys out of the queue for food. He loves biology because, while learning, he is always amazed by the things that happen in nature. He would love to be a doctor, but also dreams of playing in the grand slams, like Djokovic and Alcaraz. He receives some support with his school fees from an organisation while his mother provides the rest and the scholastic materials when she can. He wants to be ranked highly among the tennis players in the world because it will allow him to play in the big tournaments like the Grand Slams. He believes that once he can reach that level, money won’t be a problem and he will be able to support his family and live a better life in a bigger house. Seebi says COLTA has taught him alot, he has greatly changed his game, from the volleys to the serving and smashes. He recently was a singles quarter-finalist and doubles winner in the ITF/CAT Africa Junior Championships for Eastern Africa in Nairobi, an achievement he attributes to the COLTA program which has provided a steady training program for him.
